The Brief NI

To understand the scale of what automated intelligence can do, look at The Brief NI. I built it out of frustration. Finding real news buried under uncritical government press releases and paywalls was nearly impossible, so I wanted to see if automation could cut through the noise and spot the gaps in public policy.

Over the past year, I engineered and refined a custom data journalism pipeline that continuously monitors Northern Ireland government feeds. When new data is published, the system automatically extracts the text. Using LangGraph to orchestrate complex AI workflows, the system does not just summarise the release. It actively uses Retrieval-Augmented Generation to cross-reference the new announcement against approximately 65 different data sources, structuring the resulting context and critique into a searchable archive.

What started as a personal experiment is now a mature platform attracting over 2,500 unique visitors a month, including a growing newsletter audience of local C-suite executives and policy researchers. The system effectively does the daily monitoring and analytical work of a full-time research team. Is it safe to give AI my company data?

Yes, if engineered correctly. I do not use the public versions of ChatGPT or Claude. I build pipelines using their enterprise API tiers, where your data is legally protected and explicitly excluded from public model training. Your data remains yours.

How much does a custom AI tool cost?

I charge a transparent rate of £40 per hour for development. Most functional prototypes take a few days of focused work, and we scope everything upfront so there are no surprise bills. Once live, you only pay the direct API computing costs to the provider (which are typically fractions of a penny per task) plus standard server hosting.
